A Seasonal Grounds Care Checklist for Commercial Properties

Grounds care isn't just mowing on autopilot – what a site needs shifts through the year, and a lot of properties end up either over-serviced in winter or under-serviced right before the growth season hits. Here's a rough seasonal shape.

Spring – the growth surge

Mowing frequency needs to increase as growth picks up. Garden beds and hedging need their first proper tidy-up after winter dormancy, and it's the right time to check irrigation before the dry months.

Summer – frequency and presentation

Peak mowing season, plus weed control before things get away on you. This is also when carparks and hardstand areas show wear most – litter, staining, cracked surfacing – so it's worth a dedicated carpark and hardstand check alongside the lawn work.

Autumn – clean-up before it compounds

Leaf fall, dieback and slowing growth. This is the season most commonly under-scoped – sites drop back to a winter-light schedule too early and end up with a messy carpark and blocked drainage by the time real winter hits.

Winter – maintenance, not neglect

Mowing frequency drops, but this isn't a "do nothing" season. Structural pruning, drainage checks and hardstand upkeep matter more in winter, not less – wet weather is when poor drainage actually shows up as a problem.

The part most checklists miss

A seasonal programme only works if someone's actually checking it against a written scope, not just turning up on a fixed roster regardless of what the season needs. That's the difference between grounds care that looks planned and grounds care that looks reactive.
